Lenovo Makes Good on Promise to Skip Ahead of Dell in PC Market

Lenovo talked a big game about how it was going to leapfrog ahead of Dell in the global PC market to become the world's second largest PC brand, and lo and behold, the company backed up its bravado with a strong third quarter. According to figures by market research firm IHS iSuppli, Lenovo's PC shipments in the third quarter rose to 12.5 million units, a 14.5 percent gain over the 10.9 million PCs it shipped in the second quarter.

No small feat, Lenovo's remarkable Q3 growth outpaced the PC market as a whole in convincing fashion, which only grew 5.5 percent during the same period. But more importantly, it put Lenovo in second place where it can now focus on usurping Hewlett-Packard for the No. 1 spot.

"Lenovo continues to capitalize on strong demand for PCs in its home market of China," said Matthew Wilkins, principal analyst for compute platforms research for IHS. "While PC sales in the United States, Europe and many other regions are suffering because of weak economic conditions and rising competition from media tablets, desktop and notebook sales remain red hot in China. This is allowing Lenovo to outgrow its U.S. rivals—and putting it in position to contend with HP for market leadership."

According to IHS iSuppli's data, Lenovo now holds a 13.9 percent share of the global PC market, trailing only HP with an even 18 percent share. Dell, meanwhile, is the third largest PC brand in the world with a 12.5 percent, followed by Acer (10.5 percent), Asus (6.6 percent), and all others combined (38.6 percent).
